To complete a master’s degree in research, a student is required to write a mémoire, the French equivalent of a master’s thesis in other higher education systems. The highest-level theses are called lisensiaatintutkielma/licentiatavhandling and väitöskirja/doktorsavhandling, for licentiate and doctoral degrees, respectively. Most Italian universities, for example, have only general requirements on the character size and the page formatting, and leave much freedom for the actual typographic details. The word dissertation can at times be used to describe a treatise without relation to obtaining an academic degree. The term thesis is also used to refer to the general claim of an essay or similar work.
Keep in mind that a significant portion of the formatting (i.e., margins, spacing and pagination) will be done by the ASU Format Wizard. The ASU Format Wizard is required for all students that have a document that goes through Graduate College format review. Please review the ASU Graduate College Format Manualbefore creating your document, and use the Format Checklist for students and Format Checklist for chairs and co-chairs. The honors thesis is a rewarding capstone experience for students and a gateway to research and other creative work beyond the undergraduate years.

It is also fairly rare for a thesis to be accepted without any revisions; the most common outcome of a defense is for the examiners to specify minor revisions . In Indonesia, the term thesis is used specifically to refer to master’s theses. The undergraduate thesis is called skripsi, while the doctoral dissertation is called disertasi.
What are the types of thesis?
The thesis may take one of three forms: a research thesis, an artistic thesis, or a project thesis.

Please note that this handbook is a generalized overview designed to support honors students enrolled in all majors at the university. More detailed information may always be obtained by attending a thesis workshop and/or meeting with an honors advisor.

Note the absence of List of Tables and List of Figures sections from the examples above. These sections are generally not necessary, and the Thesis Office advises students who are interested in a quick review with few or no corrections requested to leave these sections out of the thesis or dissertation.

After you complete your presentation, allow 5-15 minutes for questions from the public audience. Following this period, your committee will conduct a closed-door oral examination. Many students are very worried about the oral exam – don’t be! This is your chance to show off your knowledge, discuss what you might have done differently in retrospect and what you would do if you were to continue this project, for example, as a graduate student. With a thesis topic in mind, the next step is to find a thesis committee chair . The thesis chair should have significant expertise not just in your general program of study, but in an area closely related to the topic you have chosen for your honors thesis.

Be on time for your appointment, and if you must reschedule, do so early – do not be a no-show! A good working relationship or ability to communicate will make the whole thesis process much smoother.
